In den Bayerischen Voralpen gelegen, erstreckt sich der Heimgarten als Nachbarberg zum Herzogstand auf 1.790m Höhe. Wanderern bieten sich zahlreiche Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten, sowohl von Ohlstadt über die Wankhütte.

Die Anfahrt führt von München aus über die Garmischer Autobahn (A95) bis zur Ausfahrt Murnau/Kochel, dann südlich über Schwaiganger nach Ohlstadt. Am südostlichen Ortsrand finden wir einen Parkplatz (P1), falls dieser belegt sein sollte, 300m weiter östlich einen weiteren (P2).
