We made first a short evening visit and walked the Interdune trail, fascinating.
The white sand looks like snow, its Gypsum not sand.
The longer Alkali hike is more amazing because you are right in the heart of the white dunes. The trail is marked with tall poles with orange tops, it's better to rely on a gps track. The hike itself is fascinating. The Gypsum piled into our shoes, especially when running down the dunes. We had to shake out our shoes every now and then to remove the Gypsum grain, easier to walk on barefoot. White Sands National Monument is a landscape photography dream.
