Bis zur Rotstockhütte ist der Weg relativ eben. Ab hier wird es steiler und steiniger. Schwierigere Stellen sind gut durch Drahtseile und Metall-Treppenstufen gesichert. Schwindelfreiheit und Trittsicherheit ist gefragt, der Weg wird aber nie unsicher. Da man einer grossen Bogen um das Schilthorn herumgeht, gibt es die ganze Zeit gute Aussichten mit wechselnder Blickrichtung. Da die Schildhornbahn einige Mittelstationen hat, kann man auf dem Rückweg gut entscheiden, wieviel Abstieg noch drin liegt. Ich bin wegen schönem Wetter noch zur Station Birg gegangen. Bis Mürren zurück muss man mit ca. 2h extra rechnen.

Ich bin mit dem Auto bis Stechelberg gefahren (Parkplatz der Schilthornbahn). Auf dem Hinweg habe ich die Luftseilbahn bis Mürren genommen, auf dem Rückweg ab Birg.
