Salzgitter, die knapp 60 Jahre junge Stahlstadt ist eine Gründung des nationalsozialistischen Deutschlands. Ihre geschichtlichen Wurzeln reichen aber weit zurück in die Zeiten Heinrich des Löwen. Die deutlichsten Spuren aus der Vergangenheit liegen entlang dieser anspruchsvollen Route (Schlösser in Salder, Derneburg, Oelber am weißen Wege; Burgen in Lichtenberg, Gebhardshagen).
