Vom "Steinkreuz" aus geht es über eine kurze Asphalt-Strecke zur mittleren Saale-Horizontalen, die mit vielen Windungen und wenig Höhenunterschied durch die Kernberge führt, vorbei an der "Diebeskrippe" bis zum Fürstenbrunnen, von wo aus zurück bis zum Ausgangspunkt noch ein ca. 1 km langer, ordentlicher Anstieg zu bewältigen ist. Die Strecke bietet eine abwechslungsreiche, reizvolle Kulisse (schöne Waldstücke, bizarre Felsformationen, tolle Ausblicke über Jena und das Pennickental), überwiegend Waldboden.

Ein Einstieg am Steinkreuz-Parkplatz bietet sich an. Man kann aber auch vom Tal aus (z.B. Parkplatz am "Paradies") loslaufen, was natürlich anstrengender ist.
