Der Weg führt von Regensburg nach Rothenburg. Zuerst geht es auf dem Donauradweg nach Kehlheim. Dort mündet die Altmühl bz. der Rhein-Main-Donaukanal. Man kann von Kehlheim aus mit dem Schiff den Donaudurchbruch bis Weltenburg durchfahren.
Der Altmühlradweg geht bei Kehlheim grob nach Norden am Kanal lang.
Wir haben eine Route mit Umwegen zu schönen Städten abseits der Altmühl gewählt, so führt unsere Route u. a. an Ansbach und Weißenburg vorbei.
Trotz der damit verbundenen Steigungen ist die Tour auch für weniger geübte Radler machbar.
